Cockroach Control & Prevention

Cockroaches are by far one of the most difficult pests to control. Their species has survived, virtually unchanged, for more than 350 million years, and they will likely be here long after we have gone. Professional assistance is highly recommended.

  • Site Assessment – Every cockroach control service begins with a complete and thorough inspection of the structure to determine the high concentration areas and harborage utilizing specialized monitoring devices to gauge the severity of the infestation and provide you with a realistic resolution timetable.

  • Remedial Control Measures – Once we have identified harborage sites and determined the severity of the infestation, we implement a scientifically backed remedial control approach, using baits and monitors as well as other techniques when appropriate. With these measures in place we are able to successfully control all life stages of a cockroach infestation, even those deep, inaccessible areas where roaches breed.

  • Preventative Service – Recurring treatments are highly recommended for complete lasting cockroach control. In instances of multi-unit buildings, it is advisable to treat each unit, or at least the surrounding units, to achieve comprehensive control, as roaches often inhabit wall cavities.

At Rambo Total Pest Control, we have all the important tools and techniques required to effectively eliminate even the worst cockroach infestations.

The Dangers of Cockroach Infestations

Cockroaches come in many forms. Most people in the Pacific Northwest will encounter German cockroaches inside their kitchens, bathrooms, and common areas. These roaches are especially difficult to eliminate from a structure once they have established themselves. Recent studies have also shown that they are becoming more resistant to many insecticides making them even more problematic.

Though not aggressive towards humans, cockroaches are incredibly unsanitary and are known transmitters of a variety of diseases, including Salmonella and E. coli. Cockroaches can also cause your allergies to become worse. Decaying exoskeletons, feces, and associated bacteria can all have a negative impact on your health and allergies. Cockroach infestations have also been linked to asthma in children.

Some of the common traits among cockroaches are:

  • Cockroaches have cannibalistic tendencies and will eat their own dead.
  • They are also Coprophagous, which means they will also eat their own feces. In fact, roaches begin their lives primarily eating the feces of the other roaches.
  • Cockroaches can go without oxygen for up to 40 minutes.
  • Some species of cockroach (including the German cockroach) can go from newborn to adult in as little as 36 days.
  • A cockroach can survive without its head for several days. They eventually die of dehydration.
  • Cockroaches can survive for up to one year.

Cockroach Identification

There are more than 4,000 different species of cockroach throughout the world, including American, brown-banded, smoky-brown, and the Madagascar hissing cockroach to name a few. In Western Washington, there are primarily two cockroaches you will encounter: the prolific German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach:

German Cockroach

The most common roach species encountered in the structures of our region is the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). During a female German roach’s lifetime (less than one year), she can produce as many as 8 egg cases with up to 48 eggs in each case. That equals almost 400 new roaches! Add in all the reproduction of her offspring, and you can understand why cockroaches are such a formidable opponent to professional pest controllers and residents of roach-infested structures alike.

German cockroaches are known for transmitting diseases such as Salmonella and contributing to childhood asthma. These pests can be more than just disgusting, they can be downright dangerous. The longer an infestation is allowed to exist in your home, the harder and longer it will take to remove them.

Oriental Cockroach

The Oriental cockroach is primarily an outdoors pest. They are larger than most cockroaches and are very darkly colored brown or black. Oriental cockroaches are found primarily in sewers, under rocks, or in dense piles of vegetation. They require high-moisture environments in order to survive, which make the interior of your homes inhospitable.

Typically, if you find one of these cockroaches in your home, it is close to dying if not already dead. Sometimes they are found in garages or sheds where they have ventured in but could not find their way back out. If you find this cockroach in your bathroom, kitchen, or sink, they have found their way up a drain. In most cases, if you keep your drains closed or covered when not in use, you will not have a problem with this pest. Exterior preventative treatments can keep their exterior population in check and minimize the amount of activity you see outside.

Cockroach Control Methods

Almost every cockroach infestation must be controlled using a multifaceted attack on them. There are mechanical control measures—such as monitoring glue boards and vacuuming—that immediately remove a large portion of the population and their eggs. Insect Growth Regulators (IGRs) will prevent young roaches from reaching the reproductive adult stage, and gel baits can provide more placement flexibility and faster results than standard roach motels.

  • Sanitation – Many times, sanitation improvement is also required to gain control in these difficult circumstances. Roaches can and will eat almost anything to survive, including their own feces and human toenail clippings. Eliminating all potential food sources is vital, especially when roach baits will be used to obtain control.

  • Ultra-Low Volume – In the event of a severe infestation, we can use an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) machine to inject materials deep into the smallest inaccessible cracks, crevices, and voids where the roaches live and breed.

  • Recurring Treatment – Roach infestations are rarely fully controlled with one treatment, so recurring services are highly recommended for complete and lasting control. If a multi-unit building is infested, it is recommended that each unit or at least the surrounding units be treated for complete control, as roaches frequently dwell in the wall cavities.

Cockroach Prevention Tips

There are a number of steps that you can take to prevent cockroach infestations and help to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing cockroach control services:

  • Proper Food Storage Management – Ensure all food items are meticulously cleaned and securely stored in airtight containers to preserve freshness and prevent contamination.

  • Prompt Spill Containment – Swiftly address any spills to maintain a clean and hygienic kitchen environment, reducing the risk of attracting pests and bacteria.

  • Timely Post-Meal Cleanup – Immediately wash dishes and tidy up cooking materials once a meal concludes, fostering cleanliness and minimizing the chance of lingering odors or mess.

  • Organizational Decluttering – Maintain an organized kitchen space by reducing clutter and avoiding densely packed storage areas, facilitating easier access to items, and promoting cleanliness.

  • Efficient Food Rotation System – Implement a systematic approach such as ‘First In, First Out’ for stored food products to ensure freshness and minimize waste. Discard any dry goods exhibiting signs of insect infestation to uphold food safety standards.
