The Door-Knocking “Salesman”
Have you noticed segway-riding pest control salespeople cruising your neighborhood in recent years? You are not alone! During the spring and summer, a number of large out-of-state pest control companies recruit college-age folks from across the country to go door-to-door selling pest control services throughout the Puget Sound region. They equip these ambitious and confident young adults with highly effective sales tactics to capitalize on the natural fear of pests that many people have, and these companies train their salespeople with just enough information about pests to reinforce those fears. The pay structure is usually 100% commission, and each sale puts a sizable paycheck into their pocket. Due to these financial incentives, some of these doorknocking salespeople are predacious in their efforts with overly aggressive methods and oftentimes outright lies.
We hear similar stories of regret and disbelief every year, after a happy client of Rambo Total Pest Control is pestered by one of these doorknockers and unwittingly signs up for the other company’s services – even though they charge more money and offer an inferior service. Or the complaints about the persistent ones who ring your doorbell at 9PM hoping to catch you in a moment of weakness.
Some of our clients have sent us copies of the agreements they signed, and if they ask for our assistance, we have helped them to cancel those contracts a few times as well. In studying these agreements, they usually offer quarterly service frequency (once every three months) with monthly invoicing automatically charged to their credit card. That’s correct, 12 invoices per year for 4 services. These monthly invoices usually range anywhere from $59 to $89 a month. They present this as if it is a tremendous deal, but if we do the math on this it equals $177 to $267 for ONE quarterly service. A comparable quarterly service offered by Rambo Total Pest Control would generally be $145, which includes no-charge extra services if needed in-between the quarterlies. The way they explain this awkward invoicing breakdown creates confusion, and people often think they will save money by switching providers. In the example above a client would save $128 to $488 over the course of the year by using Rambo Total Pest Control. These are actual figures they regularly quote for their services, but the manner in which they explain the pricing is so confusing that people think they will save money by going with the doorknocking company.

Investing in Technicians
Worth noting as well is that most of these door-to-door pest control companies do not invest in their technicians with the necessary training and licensing for them to legally be able to treat for wood destroying insects like Carpenter Ants and Termites. Be sure to ask them if protection against these structurally-damaging pests is included in the fine print of the agreement they offer.
These doorknockers often go to great lengths to get a person to sign up for their service. Some of the tactics we have heard about are:
No Perfect Pest Control Company
There is no perfect pest control company. Our company is a work-in-progress, as is every successful business. We have much to learn, and we make mistakes every day. This approach allows us to continue our growth as professionals. We completely understand that there may be clients of ours who have justifiable reasons to cancel with us and go with a competitor. After all, there are LOTS of excellent pest control companies in our area!
Before anyone signs up with us, or any of our competitors, we hope that they will take some time to ask themselves some questions to ensure they are selecting the best pest control service provider.
Ask yourself questions like:
Take Action Against Unethical Sales Practices
We strongly recommend that all homeowners take some time to do some basic research before signing up with any pest control provider, or any service provider who is coming to your home for that matter.
As an industry we are taking action against these unethical sales practices. Through the Washington State Pest Management Association, we have created a survey (WSPMA.com/Report) to collect the public’s personal experiences with these doorknocking pest control salespeople. We will then present our findings to the Washington State Attorney General’s office to hopefully help to give some more teeth to the rules and regulations around these unethical sales practices. On a related note, there is a case currently underway in which Los Angeles County is suing one of these door-to-door pest control sales companies for their deceptive and unethical sales practices. These same practices are taking place on front porches and in communities across the country, and I would not be surprised to see many more similar lawsuits filed in the coming years.
Thank you for being some of our favorite people. The clients we get to serve are interesting, empowering, funny, tactful, kind, sometimes-a-little-scared, and always appreciated. Take care, and happy Spring 2025!
