Weather
Any time of the year or in any type of weather you, your family and your house could be greeted by many different types of pests. To some that may come as a surprise but it's true. It's also true that some weather patterns bring about increased activity in certain specific pests. Such as...
During cold periods you are very likely to encounter rodents seeking harborage inside your crawlspace and venturing out into the pantry for a bite to eat. They tend to stay close to human dwellings for warmth, shelter and most importantly for food. There aren't nearly as many food sources outside during the winter as there are during the summer so do yourself a favor and don't feed the dog outside, close the lid on your garbage can tightly and keep the lawn seed locked away in a secure area. These are all major attractions for rats, mice and any other hungry critter.
The warmth of a summer afternoon can add an element to a barbecue or a celebration not available during the rest of the year but the yellowjackets and bald faced hornets love it too! Warm periods bring about increases in stinging insect activity, as well as fleas, ants, spiders, earwigs and many other crawling and flying insects. Keep a close eye out for these pests during those wonderfully warm days of summer.
Any change in weather can dramatically increase a mole's tunneling efforts, resulting in more and more unsightly dirt mounds in your front lawn. If it's been dry for a while and the weather forecast calls for rain, watch for those telltale mounds to pile up. The same is true if you reverse the weather pattern or if it's been warm and begins to cool off.
What does all this mean in the end? Good question. In our years of experience we've learned not to be surprised by anything weather related. In other words if it's the middle of January and we have a "warm" 55 degree day, don't be surprised to field several calls of winged carpenter ants flying around someone's kitchen. And rats certainly invade homes and businesses all year long. With that said, it is very important to have trained eyes inspecting your property for these pests on a regular basis.
