General/Other Insects Some other household pests encountered in the South Sound region of Western Washington are: Flies, Springtails, Silverfish, Bedbugs and Boxelder Bugs (aka: true bugs, plant bugs). Of course there are many, many more pest species that could be encountered any day in or around your property but these are some of the primary targets that don't quite fit into the other groups we have listed previously. Flies Flies can be a serious nuisance and health hazard inside or outside of a structure. Many different types and locations of houses can be afflicted by a fly populatiton. Farm houses, lakefront houses, wetland area houses and any other location can have serious fly problems. They are attracted to and often breed in decaying matter or moist ground areas. Many flies will lay eggs in dead animal carcasses and the larvae consume the organic matter while growing. Control of flies can vary considerably from one situation to the next but it usually involves removing any moisture situations, like overwatered houseplants for Fungus Gnats or rotting yard waste. Control could involve fogging the immediate vicinity where the flies are most active or any of several other techniques. Springtails Sometimes confused with Fleas, Springtails are very small and tend to hop around like Fleas but they are two very different pests. Springtails are rarely found inside a structure but they can be noticed regularly on the exterior of many houses near the ground on patios, in mulch, sometimes floating in small puddles of water, they reside always near moisture. They can be quite numerous and a large population can put homeowners and children on edge. Silverfish Silverfish can be a problem in many warm, moist areas around a home or business. Their presence is often near dried foods, starch, flour or glue but we have found a majority of residential problems are related to cedar shake roofs. These pests sneak through the shakes that retain a certain desirable percentage of moisture and then they set up in the insulation, often congregating near skylights. The residents would never know they were there until they come down, almost floating, into a room and appear as if out of nowhere in the middle of the floor. These situations can be very confusing for a homeowner but not for us. We have dealt with many of the worst Silverfish infestations around! Bedbugs You thought the old "Good Night" poem was just a goofy rhyme, right? Wrong. These pests are making a serious comeback and gaining a lot of press lately. They actually bite humans and suck our blood. Their name comes from the fact that they are usually found in the creases and folds of a mattress or bed frame. The amount of travel our society is doing and the speed with which we do it contribute to the Bedbug problems we are experiencing. Many hotels and apartments are having major problems all over the world. Transported in our luggage from a tropical destination back to our bedroom at home, Bedbugs are very versatile and can survive several months without a blood meal. They don't care what the temperature is outside because it's always a comfortable 70 degrees inside your house! They have no reason to leave until you call Rambo Total Pest Control. Boxelder Bugs Also known as Plant Bugs or True Bugs, these pests are famous for their very large populations. Sometimes homeowners complain of finding these bugs in, under, around or on top of everything they touch in their yard. Sometimes they even make their way into a house looking for a place to breed or overwinter. They can take over a house within a week of the first sighting. Usually found from Spring through mid summer, the Plant Bugs of our region are usually smaller than 1/2 inch long and have a "diamond" design on their back side. Brown and Black with some red and green mixed in they can be very interesting to observe. There are many varieties of these Plant Bugs but consistent control is always necessary along with habitat modification when feasible. Call Rambo Total Pest Control today for the fastest, most reliable and environmentally friendly approach to controlling your pests, no matter what they are! |
